DESCRIPTION

Over 300 delegates from across the Northeast participated last year. New and highly engaging topics in fifteen committees that range from the Security Council to the World Food Programme. Delegates will develop their skills in research, public speaking and negotiation in the world on international relations. Delegates are encouraged to be creative in finding solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

New Students

Yes - you can come!!  You will have more experience than some of the other delegates from our work in class.  You will learn tremendous amounts.

TRANSPORTATION AND LODGING

We are not going to arrange lodging as a school.  For many of us, when you consider the time it takes to wait for shuttles back and forth to the hotel, it makes more sense to return home at nights and get a good night's sleep.  It also substantially reduces the cost of participation. That being said, this is going to be a very full three days! (See tentative schedule below). My hope is that, as in years past, those of us who live closer to Storrs can help accommodate those of you who don't.  We will be leaving from West Hartford on Friday and Sunday and are happy to provide transportation for anyone who needs it up to the capacity of our car. On Saturday, Mrs. H. will be with a group of debaters at the Vassar Debate Tournament.  We will need a parent volunteer to stay with our students on Saturday.  Please indicate if you are able to do this.   Parents are free to make whatever lodging and commuting plans that are most convenient for them.  We commuted the last few years and it was a lot but doable.

Parental Attendance

This is a drop-off activity.  Parents are not allowed to attend committee sessions but are welcome to join us for Closing Ceremonies.

Food

We will eat at meal breaks and snacks at the tables in the Student Union for dinner on Friday, lunch on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. Students are welcome to bring food from home although, even if they do, they will want to bring money for snacks and drinks. These are long days and the kids get hungry so make sure they have enough money, or food and money, so they can get sustenance when needed!

Here is a list of some of the restaurants that are in the food court:

  • The Student Union Market Place
  • One Plate, Two Plate- Located in the Student Union (Healthy fast food)
  • Panda Express- Located in the Student Union
  • Subway- Located in theStudentUnion
  • Union Street Market – Food Court within Union (Tostada, Salad Bar, and Pizza)

FEES

The cost for this tournament is $166 per delegate. This includes school and delegate registration, the participation fee for the three days and coaches' expenses. We are fortunate we are basically local so we don't have to pay hotel fees for the weekend like the majority of the other debaters.  If the fee poses a financial hardship for anyone, please email us at Admin@WestfieldAcademy.net.
