Westfield Academy is very excited to announce that the Coach of the award-winning Yale debate team, David Kimel, is once again returning this summer to the Westfield Summer Camp to teach a special program for Advanced Debate Students this summer.  Admission to this program is by application. David was the Head Coach of the Yale Debate Association from 2010-2015. Under his guidance, the team won First Place Club of the Year for all the years David has been coaching them. This summer at camp, David will teach an advanced program geared for experienced debaters who want to really focus on bringing their skills to the next level. This program will be appropriate for, although not limited to, juniors and seniors who are looking to make the transition to college debating. This is a rare and exciting opportunity!  Debaters who attended David’s classes in the past have gone on to win a number of international and regional debate tournaments including: the International Public Policy Forum; the Loomis Debate Competition (twice!), Yale Osterweis (twice!), McGill Junior Invitational Parliamentary Competition and Northfield-Mount Hermon. David graduated from Harvard, summa cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. When he was a senior at Harvard, David received intercollegiate debate's highest honor being named the First Place team of the year. He received the Howard Greenbaum Medal for speech and debate, Harvard's most prestigious prize for speech and debate.  David is currently a PhD candidate in history at Yale and expects to receive his doctorate within the year. In 2012-2013, he received the Yale Prize Teaching Fellow.

There are few things as important in every part of our lives as our ability to lead. It is clear that the active exercise of leadership skills can motivate others to effect change in the world.  Westfield's focus on developing strong leaders is a natural extension of the fundamental goals of our program: the facilitation of self-advocacy and self-expression. Each day, campers will work on learning what it means to be a leader and will have the opportunity to develop and practice strong life-long leadership skills in programming developed for summer camp 2017.

Come join us this summer for one, two, or three weeks. For those new to debate, you will learn the skills to become a confident public speaker and debater. For experienced debaters, we will improve and refine your debating skills and debate issues of import.

Model UN

This year, we are excited to once again offer our award-winning MODEL UNITED NATIONS program in week three!

Westfield's Scholarship Program

This camp is about empowering children of all ages to find their voices so that they can effect positive change in this world.

We would like to provide this opportunity to as many children as possible. Last year, we were thrilled to have almost 17% of our campers attend on full scholarship; almost 25% received some financial aid. We are partnered with The Legacy Foundation of Hartford to send boys and girls from economically disadvantaged areas of Hartford to a week of summer camp where they will learn debate and public speaking skills as well as leadership training.

If you are in a position to financially help a child who could not otherwise attend camp, please consider sponsoring a child, or making a contribution in any amount, to help a child "Find Their Voice" this summer. We already have a number of children who are hoping to attend and have their fingers crossed that people like you will help them.

The Legacy Foundation of Hartford (legacyfoundationhartford.org) is a Hartford-based 501(c)(3) organization whose mission involves identifying and supporting innovative solutions to some of the biggest problems facing our community in education with an eye toward helping to close the education gap in CT. Your donation to help a child find their voice this summer is made directly to the Legacy Foundation and is tax deductible. When making your donation, please indicate that your donation is for the purpose of sending a child to debate camp.  One-hundred per cent of the amount you donate will go directly toward paying for a child to attend camp.

Thank you so much for your generosity!
