About Westfield Academy
TO EMPOWER EACH OF OUR STUDENTS TO FIND THEIR VOICE AND TO HELP THEM DEVELOP THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO EXPRESS IT RESPECTFULLY TO EFFECT POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE WORLD.
You each have a voice and it is very important. Learning to be an effective debater, public speaker and leader will allow your voice to be heard. Our goal is to make each of you a confident, competent public speaker and oral advocate. Over the course of the year, we will discuss and debate a lot of big ideas. We place a huge emphasis on respecting each other and positive reinforcement. So come join us and learn, or perfect, the Art of Debate, Model United Nations and Public Speaking in a fun, supportive environment.
Westfield Academy is a community debate, Model United Nations, and leadership school that operates for the academic year. We also run three one-week sessions of summer camp in June. Over 130 students between the ages of 8 and 18 meet weekly during the year to debate and/or participate in Model United Nations. We also attend numerous educational forums and lectures together. Through the Westfield Annex, Westfield students have the opportunity to take classes in disciplines as varied as philosophy, economics, history, writing and politics.
Our students compete in local, state, regional, national and international debate competitions and participate in Model United Nations conferences. Westfield students have been extremely successful. We won both the 2014 and the 2016 UPenn Parliamentary Debate Tournament, a national competition. We also won the Yale Parliamentary Debate Tournament, another national competition, in 2014. Last year, two of our students won an International Junior British Parliamentary Debate Competition at McGill and we got Top Junior Speaker. Four of our students qualified to compete in the POI National Parliamentary Debate Competition in California in April of 2015. At the Yale Osterweis Debate in 2016, we won the Novice Competition with Westfield being three of the four Novice teams in the semi-finals. We took First and Second Places for Speakers in both the Varsity and Novice Divisions. In 2016, Westfield won First Place Team and First Place Speaker in both the State Civics First High School and Middle School Policy Competitions. Westfield students have won the State Civics First Middle School Policy Competition seven times (they have competed eight times); two of these years, both teams at the finals were Westfield's. Westfield won the State Civics First High School Policy Competition twice and were finalists three years. Five of our students qualified for the State Finals in the Connecticut Debate Association and one took Fourth Place Overall Speaker at the Finals. We won First Place Advanced Speaker and two Second Places in CT Debate Association Tournaments last year. Our novice team at the 2014 Yale Osterweis qualified for the Advanced semi-finals. Westfield students won Best High School Policy Debater in the state in that competition twice and Best Middle School Policy Debater in the State six times.
In the MUN world, one of our middle school students won the Best Delegate (the Highest Award) on the Security Council at the University of CT High School MUN Conference this past fall. At the 2015 Yale MUN Conference, we won a Best Delegate, an Honorable Mention and the Best New School. At the Boston UNA MUN Middle School Tournament, two of our students got Best Delegate and two received Best Public Speaker awards. Our middle school MUN team did a simulation at Kingswood Oxford in the spring. We won Best Delegate in the Security Council, an Honorable Mention and a Most Improved. At the 2015 Global Classroom Middle School Model United Nations Conference ten of our students won awards including: two Outstanding Delegations, eight Honorable Mentions and four Best Position Papers.
We are so proud of all these accomplishments but we are most proud of the fact that each and every one of our students is developing the skills they need to go out and change the world!
